Virginia Wine TV Winemaker Series: Coltsfoot Winery & Elderberry Wine

This week we travel to southwestern Virginia, not far from the Tennessee border to visit Coltsfoot Winery and their portfolio of "Country Wines". These are wines made from berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries), peaches, plums, or what ever non-grape fruit are available. Proprietor and winemaker Edward Carney discusses the short history of the winery, including their award winning label, as well as their Elderberry Wine - in particular the health benefits of Elderberries. Elderberry wine is also available at  Village Winery and Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery.  Later that weekend we found Coltsfoot wines (as well as Blacksnake Meadery and Foggy Ridge Cider) available at Inari Wines Gourmet Market in downtown Bristol. The intro music is "In Your Arms" by Charlottesville based, the Downbeat Project. And as always, VirginiaWineTV videos are available via iTunes. Cheers.

Views from the Vineyard: Corcoran Vineyards

Not all Virginia vineyard scenery involves mountains or rolling hills. At Corcoran Vineyards, the fish stocked pond provides a sanctuary for bullfrogs, dragon flies, and many types of birds - from song birds to herons. Nothing like sipping wine and hanging out under the Willow tree. The music is provided by our pal Peyton Tochtermann - Smile.

Views from the Vineyard: Bluemont Vineyard

There are some amazing views from Virginia wineries and here is one of our favorites at Bluemont Vineyard, located at 951 feet on an eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. On clear days visitors can see Tysons Corner, about 45 miles due east. Music is provided by Andrew McKnight Wildwood Flower-The Old Hundred Road from Something Worth Standing For.

Tom Principato at the Mad Fox Brewing Company

The annual beer expo, SAVOR, comes to D.C. June 8-9th and features beers from across the United States, including a few from the Commonwealth. Our friends at Mad Fox Brewing Company are hosting several events that week. Here's a video that focuses on Washington-based bluesman Tom Principato in a discussion of beer and blues with Mad Fox Brewing Company head brewer and proprietor Bill Madden. We've been following Principato's career ever since listening to Blazing Telecasters - Danny Gatton & Tom Principato way back in the early 90's. He is now releasing a new CD, "A Part of Me", which includes "some of the Washington D.C. area's best musicians who I've been recording and performing with for years: Steve Wolf, Tommy Lepson, Josh Howell and Jay Turner". Principato is considered a "Master" of the Fender Telecaster and Statocaster and he explains the difference. The bluesman also just returned from a successful European tour so in anticipation to that trip, we sampled a few European-styled brews crafted by Madden. We also learned about Madden's voyage from being a student brewer to now, an accomplished brewer owning a restaurant and a judge in the Great American Beer Festival. The episode concludes with the Tom Principato Band performing "Down in Lou'siana", a track from "A Part of Me" at the Second Chance Saloon in Columbia, Maryland. And, as usual, the video is available for download at iTunes. Cheers.

TasteCamp 2012 Visit to Linden Vineyards - The Vineyard Tour

From May 4th-6th, about 40 wine bloggers and writers visited several wineries in Virginia as part of TasteCamp 2012. We caught up with the group the last day at Linden Vineyards where proprietor Jim Law lead a vineyard tour and discussed their signature Hardscrabble and Avenius wines. This was easily the most informative tour I've participated during the past decade visiting wineries. The music is provided by The Steel Wheels: Nola's First Dance written by Jay Lapp.

TasteCamp 2012 Visit to Linden Vineyards - The Musical Version

From May 4th-6th, about 40 wine bloggers and writers visited several wineries in Virginia as part of TasteCamp 2012. We caught up with the group the last day at Linden Vineyards where proprietor Jim Law lead a vineyard tour and discussed their signature Hardscrabble and Avenius wines. This is the first of two videos covering that visit. For now, just a musical overview. Next week, in Jim Law's word. The music is provided by The Steel Wheels: Nola's First Dance written by Jay Lapp.

Winemaker Series: Jordan Harris of Tarara Winery

Here's our first episode that eventually lead to creating the VirginiaWineTV series. It features former bluegrass sensation Cadillac Sky (as the band went separate ways soon after this video) in a discussion of wine and music with Jordan Harris, the winemaker at Tarara Vineyard & Winery. We discussed the similarities between the two occupations: wine makers and musician. During the discussion we sampled three yet to be bottled wines in Tarara's new "Nova" series. These wines are made from the best grapes grown in specific vineyards or appellations and the futures are actually already sold out. Thanks also to Echo Propp, from WAMU Bluegrass Country, for co-hosting. The video is available to download for iTunes and Windows Media Player.

Pairing Wine and Food with Potomac Point Winery

In this week's episode we learn about pairing wine with food courtesy of winemaker Simone Bergese and Executive Chef Michael Stevenson of Potomac Point Winery. Simone is originally from Alba,Italy and was the Chief Winemaker for Firriato Winery in Paceco, Sicily before coming to the Commonwealth. Chef Mike apprenticed to Pastry Chef Jacques Torres in New York and chefs David Grier and Norman Love in Philadelphia before taking over Potomac Point's kitchen. Plus he's the personal stadium suite chef for the Washington Redskins. Together with the rest of the winery's staff, they are refining Potomac Point's specializing in pairing wine and food through their Le Grand Cru Bistro, Le Grand Cru Catering, and seasonal wine dinners. During this seating, Simone and Chef Mike paired their Richland Reserve Viognier with a chopped salad tossed with a Chardonnay vinaigrette; Richland Reserve Heritage with short ribs; and finally, their Rabelos Virginia Dessert Wine with a chocolate souffle. Buon Appetito!

As usual, the intro music is "How High the Mountain" by Andrew McKnight and all VirginiaWineTV videos are available via iTunes.

Loudoun County's Catoctin Creek Distilling Company

Here's a video filmed way back in November 2010 from our sister series at MyJoogTV which features Scott Harris of Catoctin Creek Distilling Company, the first legal distillery in Loudoun County since prohibition. We discussed the distillation process for organic rye whiskey, social media, government regulation of spirits, and how folk singer Andrew McKnight and the Harris' are kindred spirits regarding the eat, drink, and play music locally. The Roundstone Rye we sampled was excellent, lighter than many bourbons, but flavorful and completely smooth at the tail. The highlight of the afternoon was listening to McKnight perform "Letter to Colonel Mosby" while sitting on an oak barrel in front of the still. At winecompass.com, we are followers of "Free the Grapes, now it's time to Free the Shine.

Gaining Ground: Successful No-Till Virginia Farmers

This week we bring you an interesting video from our friend Christophe Lawrence (USDA NRCS) and Gaining Ground, an organization dedicated to improving soils, farming, and water quality in Virginia. I'm not sure if no-till farming is relevant to vineyards, but this video is relevant to anyone concerned about water quality and the over-use of chemical fertilizers.

More and more farmers all across Virginia are making the switch to soil building continuous no-till systems. These farmers are cutting costs and saving time by planting all of their crops, year in and year out, without tillage. They are also maximizing the soil benefits that come with less disturbance by adding in cover crops, crop rotation, and other practices. As diverse as they are, one thing these farmers all have in common, they tell us they are gaining ground.

Winemaker Series: Old Westminster Winery

For this episode we ventured north into Maryland to learn about a new winery - Old Westminster Winery - and to determine if they shared any similarities with start-ups in the Virginia Wine industry. We tasted wine from the barrel and one that was impressive was made from grapes sourced from Chatham Vineyards, located in the eastern shore of Virginia. Old Westminster is owned and operated by the Baker Family, with siblings Drew, Lisa, and Ashli managing the vineyard, wine making, and marketing respectively. And evidently the housing crash of 2008 lead to the creation of the winery. Wanting to sell the winery, and seeing reduced property values, the family investigated alternative uses for the land and decided, why not a vineyard and winery. They then planted seven acres of grapes, some unique to Maryland: Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Merlot, Chardonnay, Albariño, and Sauvignon Blanc. The first harvest from these vines occurred during the Autumn of 2011, so they will need to wait two more years until they can utilize estate fruit. Currently the winery is not open to the public (expect a Spring 2013 opening) but are allowing 100 Century Club members to receive lifetime access to the facility in order to taste the wines as they progress from barrel to bottle. As usual, the intro music is "How High the Mountain" by Andrew McKnight and all VirginiaWineTV videos are available via iTunes.

Drinking Local Wine: It's easy in Virginia - what about in Florida?

The 2012 DrinkLocalWine.com Conference is being held April 28th at the Metro State College, Denver, Colorado. The concept behind the drink local wine conferences is to promote the local wines produced in the host state. And it's rather easy to drink local when you live in Colorado as well as Texas, Missouri, and Virginia - previous host states. And since there are wines produced on all states, everyone can drink local. But just what are your selections, particularly in tropical Florida? This episode of Virginia Wine TV contrasts our favorite Virginia wines with the local wines available to Floridians. So how do wines from Glen Manor Vineyards, Boxwood Winery, and Barboursville Vineyards compare with wines made from Keel And Curley Winery, San Sebastian Winery, and Schnebly Redland's Winery? As usual, the intro music is "How High the Mountain" by Andrew McKnight and all VirginiaWineTV videos are available via iTunes. You can find a winery in your state by visiting WineCompass.com. Cheers.

Winemaker Series: Boxwood Winery Pours at En Primeur

This episode features Rachel Martin, Executive V.P. at Boxwood Winery, discussing Boxwood's participation in the Bordeaux "En Primeurs". This event introduces the 2011 Bordeaux vintage to the media and wine brokers using barrel samples - and in Boxwood's case hand bottled and labelled. Boxwood Winery has participated in the event the last few years and received an invitation from their French consultant Stephane Derenoncourt. In fact, Boxwood was the first American winery invited to participate in the event. In the video, Rachel mentions that she will attend En Primeurs with Chris Parker of New Horizon Wines Ltd, who is importing Virginia wines into the United Kingdom. However, we learned later that Mr. Parker had to modify his itinerary and will be in the U.K. that week - evidently to the benefit of Boxwood and other Virginia wineries. Stay tuned for more details. And as usual, the intro music is "How High the Mountain" by Andrew McKnight and all VirginiaWineTV videos are available via iTunes. Cheers.

Winemaker Series: Corcoran Brewing and Vineyards

This episode features Kevin Bills, brew master at Corcoran Brewing Company, and Lori Corcoran, winemaker at Corcoran Vineyards, discussing wine and beer at the Corcoran complex. This is the only joint winery-brewery facility in Virginia and was intended to provide visitors with the greatest incentive to visit the winery. Now the brewery has taken a life of its own, with demand facilitating an early expansion. In addition to using local ingredients when possible, Corcoran Brewing also maintains a small Hop farm. On the other side of the farm lies Corcoran Vineyards, with a new brand of fun fruit wines such as Apple, Cello (Petit Manseng), Raz (Merlot and Raspberries), and USB (Chambourcin aged in used A. Smith Bowman Distillery barrels). As usual, the intro music is "How High the Mountain" by Andrew McKnight and all VirginiaWineTV videos are available via iTunes. Cheers.

Winemaker Series: Castle Hill Cider & Kvevri

On a very windy day (and we apologize for the limited audio) we visited Castle Hill Cider to discus cider and Kvevri with cider maker Stuart Madany. While sipping a glass of Levity, their flagship sparkling Virginia cider made from 100% Albemarle Pippin; we learned how the operation started and about their use of ancient Kvevri terracotta vessels. Kvevri are the original containers in which humanity first created wine some 7,000 years ago in the Caucasus Mountains. And Castle Hill is the sole operation to utilize these vessels in the United States and the only cider maker worldwide. They are helping to preserve history considering that there are only a few artisans still alive who produce Kvevri. As usual, the intro music is "How High the Mountain" by Andrew McKnight and all VirginiaWineTV videos are available via iTunes. And to learn more about Kvevri visit Kvevri.com or DomainGeorgia.com. Governor Robert McDonnell Discusses the Virginia Wine Industry

Before presenting the 2012 Governor's Cup to Jeff White of Glen Manor Vineyards, Governor Robert McDonnell joins Virginia Wine TV to discuss why he's so passionate in promoting the Virginia Wine industry. Yes jobs are an important reason and Virginia is still an agriculture dominated state. That is why he and the First Lady use the Bully Pulpit to "recommend" that restaurants and other venues in the state offer Virginia wine. His administration also actively markets Virginia wine on the world market via trad missions to Hong Kong, India, Israel, and Europe. And he believes that after is one term expires, that the Virginia Legislature will continue the momentum. At the end we toast with the gold winning Tarara Vineyard & Winery 2010 Honah Lee White Vinifera Blend. Cheers and video is also available via iTunes.

Winemaker Series: Breaux Vineyards & Vertical Tasting

This week's episode features Jennifer Breaux-Blosser, Breaux Vineyards in Loudoun County, discussing vertical tasting through various Merlot vintages (2002, 2004, 2007). She describes how a vertical tasting shows yearly differences in the same varietal wine, but also how a wine's composition changes over time. The next Merlot Vertical Tasting at Breaux is scheduled for March 24th. This is also an exciting time for Breaux Vineyards. Their 2010 Viognier was just included Oz Clarke 250 Best Wines. That's worldwide - not just here in the states. As usual, the intro music is "How High the Mountain" by Andrew McKnight and all VirginiaWineTV videos are available via iTunes. Cheers.

Winemaker Series: Paradise Springs Winery & Wine Terms

This week's episode features Rob Cox, the winemaker at Paradise Springs Winery, discussing wine terms you may hear when visiting a tasting room. We covered brix, residual sugar, acidity, racking, cooperage, fermenting, malolactic fermentation, reduction, and bottle shock. And we discussed these terms in relation to the Paradise Springs 2010 Chardonnay, the successor to the 2009 Governor's Cup Winner. As usual, the intro music is "How High the Mountain" by Andrew McKnight and all VirginiaWineTV videos are available via iTunes. Cheers.

  • Brix - Concentration of sugar in grape must
  • pH - A chemical shorthand for [p]otential of [H]ydrogen, used to express relative acidity or alkalinity in solution
  • Acidity - The amount of acid in the must, liquor, or finished wine. Insufficient acidity in the must will result in a poor fermentation and a slightly medicinal and flat taste. Too much acid will give the wine an unpleasant sourness or tartness
  • Whole Clustered Press - Helps minimize the amount of malic acid and tannins that naturally exist in the skins, seeds and stems from entering the wine
  • Cold Soaked - Technique to extract a deeper color and tannin structure
  • Sur Lies ("on the lees") - Process of leaving the lees in the wine for a few months to a year, accompanied by a regime of periodic stirring
  • Malolactic Fermentation - The process to reduce acid in red wines and some selected white wines by organic rather than chemical means.
  • Racking - The process of siphoning the wine off the lees to allow clarification and aid in stabilization by adding oxygen.
  • Residual Sugar (rs) - The natural grape sugar that is either unfermented at the end of the fermentation process or added back into the wine
  • Reduction - Describes the presence of volatile sulfur compounds in wine.
  • Bottle Shock - A reaction that occurs in wine immediately after corking, resulting from the large amount of oxygen it absorbed during bottling.

Winemaker Series: Reynard Florence Vineyard & Petit Manseng

This week we feature a newcomer to the Virginia Wine scene, Roe Allison of Reynard Florence Vineyard. This Barboursville winery specializes in Petit Manseng - a French grape from the Jurançon region of South West France. This grape is most suitable for off-dry or dessert wines as it combines concentrated natural sugar with high acidity. As we listen to Mr. Allison, we find that Petit Manseng is suitable for Virginia because its loose clusters and think skins protect the grape from humid summers.

Whereas most vinifera grapes made their entrance in America through California; Petit Manseng owes its existence in the New World to the Virginia Wine industry. Jennifer McCloud of Chrysalis Vineyards and Alan Kinne, then at Horton Vineyards, embarked on a wine exploration of Europe - searching for wine grapes that could by cultivated in Virginia. Two grapes that registered were Albarino and Petit Manseng. Chrysalis and Horton both received budwood from Virginia Tech Extension Agent Tony Wolf and here is where the story gets interesting. Both wineries bottled a 100% Petit Manseng. Horton labeled the wine Petit Manseng and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Trade (TTB) had no idea it was a grape variety and accepted the label as just the name of a wine; not a specific grape. On the other hand, Jenni McCloud petitioned the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Trade (TTB) to include it as an approved American Grape Variety name and became the first winery to legally bottle a Petit Manseng. Fast forward a decade later and almost 25 Virginia wineries are producing a Petit Manseng and some popular California wineries such as Tablas Creek Vineyard have followed Virginia's leadership and starting to bottle a 100% Petit Manseng.

Winemaker Series: Horton Vineyards & Viognier

Mike Heny, winemaker at Horton Vineyards, joins us to discuss the history of the winery, introducing new wine grapes into the Virginia, and Viognier - Virginia's signature wine. Horton was the first Virginia winery to plant Viognier and stellar wines produced in the early 1990's lead to it being included in Paul Lukacs' The Great Wines of America: The Top Forty Vintners, Vineyards, and Vintages. Also of interest is that the one of the other two non-left coast wineries mentioned in the Lukacs book, Missouri's Stone Hill Winery, was the source for the Norton vines that Dennis Horton re-introduced back into Virginia. And Alan Kinne, who was the original winemaker at Horton is currently the winemaker at Chrysalis Vineyards, in Middleburg, Virginia - also the world's largest grower of Norton grapes. The intro music to this series is "How High the Mountain" by Andrew McKnight. And as always, VirginiaWineTV videos are available via iTunes. Cheers.
